Do you have goals in life or you're living just for the sake of living? Why is it important to set realistic goals in life? How to set goals and achieve them?
These are questions which probably no one loves to answer.
But if you ask someone how was that movie, he or she will reply will lots of enthusiasm about the pros and cons of the movie.
But the moments it comes to talking on serious matters like goal setting and objective of life you tend to get confused and puzzled.
In other words you try to ignore this subject and I believe it is this ignorance and negative attitude that stops you from reaching your goals and living your dream life.
This ignorance shows you don't have solid purpose in life and when you don't have purpose, you lack the vision and this lack of vision slowly develops in to fear of failure and this fear of failure eventually kills your inner peace and happiness.
Correct me If I'm wrong?
If this is your situation don't worry my friend, you're not alone.
There are many like you and even I was once just like you. But it all changed with a tragedy.
I realized the importance of having purpose in life.
Today it's your turn to understand what is goal setting? Why you need to set goals? And How to achieve your goals in the long run.
So, guys if you're serious enough to live a meaningful life. It's time to take action, so join me in this post.
And believe me by the end of this article you'll have a solid vision and purpose to move forward in life which is the basic theme of this post.
#1. Focus is The Key To Setting Goals And Achieving Them
Focus is the heart and core for achieving anything in life, whether it's success or winning a girl's heart.
Anything you want to achieve in life requires focus and deep concentration.
I would love to illustrate my point with an inspirational short story on personal goals examples that you will prove the significance of focus.
An ancient Indian sage was teaching his disciples the art of archery. He put a wooden bird as the target and asked them to aim at the eye of the bird.
The first disciple was asked to describe what he saw. He said, "I see the trees, the branches, the leaves, the sky, the bird and its eye.."
The sage asked this disciple to wait. Then he asked the second disciple the same question and he replied, "I only see the eye of the bird." The sage said, "Very good, then shoot." The arrow went straight and hit the eye of the bird.
The moral of the story is - Unless we focus on your goal honestly, you cannot achieve it.
YES! It is difficult to focus and concentrate, as there are lot of distractions around us.
But it is a skill that can be mastered with perseverance, practice, dedication and honesty..... I hope you got the point.
On the bright sunny day, the most powerful magnifying glass will not light paper if you keep moving the glass.
But if you focus and hold it, the paper will light up. Such is the power of focus and concentration.
Studies have shown that you have better chance of reaching your goals when you write them down.
It's because when you write them down you feels its real.
Even though you cannot actually see it physically, but it makes whole lot of sense.
You give yourself chance to work accordingly and manage the time frame of achieving certain tasks ahead of time.
More importantly you also feel confident as it provides with something you can visualize and reflect on.
Once again I would love to share with you a beautiful story that will prove the importance of writing your personal goals.
You might have heard the name of Florence May Chadwick an American swimmer recognized for long-distance open water swimming.
She was the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions, setting a time record each time.
On July 4, 1952, Florence Chadwick was on her way to becoming the first woman to swim the Catalina Channel.
She had already conquered the English Channel. The world was watching. Chadwick fought the dense fog, bone-chilling cold and many times, the sharks.
She was striving to reach the shore but every time she looked through her goggles, all she could see was the dense fog. Unable to see the shore, she gave up.
Chadwick was sad when she knew that she was only half a mile from the coast. She quit, not because she was a quitter but because her goal was not in sight anywhere.
The obstacles didn't stop her. She said, "I'm not making excuses. If only I had seen the land, I could have made it."
Two months later, again she went back and swam the Catalina Channel. This time, in spite of the bad weather, she had her goal in mind and not only accomplished it but beat the men's record by two hours.

I believe now it is clear in your mind, why it is so important to write down your goals.
#3. Set Goals That Are Realistic And Achievable
This is really, really important when it comes to reaching your goals.
Or else you will fall flat on your face.
Let me tell you why it matters so much.
Say For Instance - After reading this article you're so pumped up that now you've decided to set a goal to become a millionaire in the next 12 months or even 24 months.
Now tell me is this really possible?
The point is enthusiasm, motivation and self-confidence alone is not enough to reach a specified goal in life.
What actually important is - Your goal should feel and look realistic, it should be achievable in true sense.
You cannot become Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs just because you're enthusiastic and motivated.
You need to set goals as per your passion, knowledge and skills.
Depending on that you need to set time frames to achieve certain segments of that goal and than move on to the other segment.
Your goal needs to be realistic, motivating and achievable.
Not overwhelming, energy sapping and frustrating.
Don't set goals that are out of your reach.
Setting an unrealistic goal will lead to procrastination and put you off target very early.
In other words you will end your journey, even before you actually begun.
I hope now you understood the true importance of why is it important to set realistic goals in life.
#4. It's Important To Walk in The Right Direction To Achieve Your Goals.
You've a goal, you also have a plan, but do you have direction to execute it properly.
Many businesses fail just because of this one critical factor.
They have a definite plan, but they lack direction and when you lack direction, you walk on a blind path which is really insane.
Let me share with a beautiful example to prove my point.
A man was traveling and stopped at an intersection.
He asked an elderly man, "Where does this road take me?" The elderly person asked, "Where do you want to go?" The man replied, "I don't know." The elderly person said, "Then take any road. What difference does it make?"
Suppose you have the football eleven enthusiastically ready to play the game, all charged up, and then someone took the goal post away.
What would happen to the game? There is nothing left. How do you keep score?
How do you know you have arrived? Enthusiasm without direction is like wild fire and leads to frustration. Goals give a sense of direction and satisfaction.
Would you sit in a train or a plane without knowing where it was going? The obvious answer is no. Then why you want to go through your own life without having any goals?
I hope you got the point now. If you cannot specify right direction for your goals, you simply cannot achieve them no matter how enthusiastic and full of confidence you're.
#5.Keep Track of Your Progress
It's important to keep track record of your progress when it comes to achieving personal goals and targets.
Say for instance - You have a set goal to lose 10 pounds in the next 3 months.
In this scenario you need to observe 3 important things.
Is this goal realistic and achievable in the time frame that you've set.
Have you done proper planning before setting this goal or you've just blindly set a date.
Lastly if the above steps are executed properly, now it's time to keep track record of the amount of calories that you'll burn each day.
As there will be certain days when you won't feel like going to the gym, including all these things will help you to figure out what changes you need to make in order to lose 10 pounds well within the stipulated time frame.
The point is if you cannot measure it, you cannot accomplish it. Measurement is a way of monitoring our progress.
This was just an personal goals example. I understand every one's goals will not be the same. But I hope the point that I wanted to convey is clear.
#6. Don't Confuse Your Desires With Your Goals
This part is very significant in the process of setting up an realistic goal. You must not confused your desires with goals.
Desires are weak and they are nothing but a set of demands made by your heart and mind.
Having a desire is not a bad thing, but to manifest that desire into reality you need to convert your desires into goals.
I hope you got the point.
Desire without the right guidance and direction is extremely weak and it can create hindrance and confusion in your mind.
The painful thing is converting that desire into goal which requires, dedication, determination, honesty, sacrifice, will power, discipline and dead lines.
That is what differentiates a desire from a goal.
Goals are dreams with a deadline and an action plan. Goals can be worthy or unworthy. It is passion, not wishing, that manifests dreams into reality.
A wishful desire turns into goal when it is fed with dedication, determination and honesty.
#7. Understand The Difference Between Working And Accomplishing
To be honest we all work in life, but do we all achieve our goals?
Believe me if you're reading this line can you raise your hands and say YES!
I doubt you will!
If it was so easy, the world would have been jam packed with successful peoples all around.
Let me explain myself with an example.
There is a huge difference between working and accomplishment.
This was demonstrated by a French scientist named Fable. He conducted an experiment with the caterpillars.
Caterpillars follow the one in front of them blindly. Fable arranged them in a circle in a flower pot so that the lead caterpillar actually was behind the last one forming a circle.
He put pine needles (food for the caterpillars) in the center of the flower pot. The caterpillars kept going in a circle in the pot.
Eventually, after a week of circling around, they dropped dead of exhaustion and starvation with food only inches away from them.
We need to learn a lesson from the caterpillars. Just because you are doing something, doesn't mean you are getting anywhere.
One must evaluate one's activity in order to sense the fulfillment and accomplishment of certain goals.
If we confuse our working with accomplishment, we could be making great time but we won't get anywhere.
A farmer had a dog who used to sit by the roadside waiting for vehicles to come around.
As soon as one came he would run down the road, barking and trying to overtake it.
One day a neighbor asked the farmer "Do you think your dog is ever going to catch a car?" The farmer replied, "That is not what bothers me. What bothers me is what he would do if he ever caught one.
Many of us in life behave like that dog who is pursuing meaningless goals
Now it's up to you to decide where your life is heading.
Are you working towards a meaningless goal or meaningful goal...Think about it before its too late.
#8. Last But Not The Least Don't Forget Your Values and Vision
Your values and vision play a very critical role in the process of achieving your goals.
For me value is following your ethics, no matter how bad the situation is and vision is doing the right thing for the right reason.
It's a crime if you don't have values and vision in your life.
The seven deadly sins according to Mahatma Gandhi are:
1. having wealth without work;
2. pleasure without conscience;
3. knowledge without character;
4. business without morality (ethics);
5. science without humanity;
6. religion without sacrifice;
7. politics without principle.
Say for instances - When a little child is born, the entire family and relatives are happy, but the child cries.
when we die, it should be the other way round. We should be rejoicing with the satisfaction of having made the contribution to the society and leaving the world by making it a better place to live.
Let the world cry that it has lost a good soul and become poorer. We are not just takers, we were also givers.
What I want to say is in the process of reaching your goals, don't forget your values. You have come in the world to contribute so make that important contribution.
People may forget how rich you were, but they will never forget how helping and kind you were.
The little acts of kindness performed by the person during his lifetime never goes unnoticed.
In fact, they are talked and remembered more after the person is gone. This is what it means by values and vision.
Values and vision has to be an integral part of your goal setting without them you may accomplish the goal, but you'll certainly fail to make a mark on people's heart and mind.
I believe these 8 points are good enough to start with your goal setting (realistic goal setting).
But I also want to emphasize on one significant factor now that you've reached to the end of the article. I want you to apply whatever you've learned here.
I am not telling this is the best article you've read, but definitely there is some positive to take from this article.
